Born in 1887 at the Hidden Hill Plantation along the banks of the histroic Cane River, Clementine Hunter moved to Melrose Plantation at the age of fifteen. For the next thirty or so years she worked in the fields and kitchen of Melrose until one day, in her fifties, she picked up a couple of discarded tubes of paint and rendered her first painting...on a window shade. That's when Hunter, using exuberant colors and bold strokes, began to document singular events in Old South plantation life. Her paintings are known to record river baptisms, cotton picking, pecan harvesting, funerals, washdays, and other everyday events. Clementine Hunter: American Folk Artist includes a detailed biography, some 100 color photographs of her work, an appendix of exhibits, and a list of permanent collections that display her work. 160 pages.
